The Black Stars of Ghana have failed to qualify to the round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after failing to get a positive result against Uruguay.
Coach Otto Addo and his team needed just a draw to qualify to the round of 16 but failed to do so at the expense of Uruguay.
Heading into the game, the Black Stars were poised to take a revenge on Uruguay as they were denied a semifinal qualification in 2010 after Luiz Suarez handled the ball in the dying minutes and Asamoah Gyan failing to score from the penalty spot.
Ghana however had the chance to take the lead in the first half after Kudus Mohammed was fouled in the penalty area and awarded a penalty.
Scenes of 2010 repeated itself as Andre Ayew’s penalty was saved by the Uruguayan keeper.
Uruguay took advantage of the set back and took the lead five minutes after Ghana missed the penalty.
Luiz Suarez and his team doubled their advantage before the end of the first half to put them on the verge of qualifying.
The Black Stars fought hard to get back into the game but could not find a way as the game ended in favour of the Uruguayans.
Despite Uruguay’s win, they could also not make it out of the group as South Korea beat Portugal by 2 goals to 1 to send them through alongside Portugal.
The defeat means Ghana finished fourth in the group with 3 points, scoring five goals and conceding seven.
