The chairman of the Bono East Woodworkers Association, Mr. Akwasi Gyan Dwomo, has urged the National Service Secretariat and the government of Ghana to include artisanal labour among the sectors where National Service members can be deployed to serve.

According to him, it is painful when artisanal works are excluded from fields national service personnel are posted to serve.

He said the artisans could have supported the government to reduce the unemployment rate if they are posted there.

Mr. Dwomo said most people who complete national service become jobless. But if they did their national service at artisanal works, they would have gained some skills to create their own businesses to make a living comfortably for themselves.

Mr. Akwasi Gyan Dwomo also called on the government of Ghana to support artisans in the country because they play major roles in the development of the country in terms of reducing unemployment.

National Service Scheme is mandated to deploy a pool of skilled manpower drawn primarily from tertiary institutions to support the development efforts of both the public and private sectors in Ghana.

As it is mandated by the constitution of Ghana that graduands from tertiary institutions are to serve the country for a year under the National Service Scheme to promote the well-being of the country.
