Ghanaian rapper Michael Elliot Kwabena Okyere Darko widely known in Ghana as Obrafour has reportedly sued Drake, a Canadian rapper, for copyright infringement.
According to reports, Obrafour’s decision to sue the Canadian rapper is as a result of Drake sampling his “Oye Ohene” song without his permission.
Reports suggest that Drake and his management team had approached him to use the sample, but Obrafour did not give permission.
However, Drake went ahead to sample his “Oye Ohene (Remix)” in his song “Calling My Name.”
“Defendants released the Infringing Work on June 17, 2022, despite the fact that an agent of one or more Defendants had previously contacted Obrafour seeking to obtain Obrafour’s permission for the use of the Copyrighted Work in the Infringing Work.”
“Obrafour never granted Defendants permission to use the Copyrighted Work and the Infringing work was released mere days later,” parts of the document read.
Meanwhile, Obrafour is requesting that the court order the parties to pay him $10 million in damages as recompense for his works, among other things.
