The New Patriotic Party Greater Accra Regional Secretary, Mr. Odalai Packer, has described allegations levelled against him by the Anyaa-Sowutum Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, for organizing thugs to cause mayhem at Olebu during the election to select a candidate to contest the upcoming 2024 assembly elections as mere hatred.
According to him, the allegation was made to tarnish his earned reputation, and as a general secretary, “the MP thinks that I am coming to contextualize him for the MP position.”
Speaking to the Republic Press, Mr. Packer denied the allegation that he attacked and assaulted one Henry Boahen, a contender for the assembly elections in the Olebu Electoral Area within the Anyaa-Sowutuom Constituency.
Narrating the chronology of events to the paper, he said the community has met at one point for some years now when it comes to assembly elections to select one candidate to contest the assembly election.
The Regional Secretary said it was during such an event to elect one candidate in the community that the NPP party chose him to represent the party in the community, and “I went to the voting grounds with my driver only and not with thugs or macho men as claimed by some media reports.”
Mr. Packer said during counting, one man who is an electoral area coordinator started creating confusion, and “we all requested he go and sit down, but he didn’t listen to us, so we all left him and continued the exercise.”
“The total votes for the election were 105 and the incumbent Assemblyman got 65 of the votes, but the said NPP electoral area coordinator snatched the ballot and took to his heels so the community people and the delegates there gave him a hot case and was eventually apprehended,” Mr. Packer stated.
“The mob wanted to beat him, but I was the one who rushed to them and stopped them from assaulting him and collected the ballot from his hands and nobody touched him. We met the MP three days ago (Wednesday, May 3) who said the guy came to complain that he was beaten and asked him to report to the police so why are they now saying I assaulted him,” he quizzed.
“Let me put it on record that immediately, I am not interested in the MP position, I am the Regional General Secretary, so they should understand that.”
A short video sighted by the Republic Press about the counting process clearly shows that there was no such incident purported by a public cross-session.
Giving clarity to the issue, the incumbent Assemblyman, Mr. George Adu Darko, who won the election by 65 votes out of 105, said what happened at the event and aftermath clearly shows some people in the constituency want to knock heads.
He called on the rank and file of the NPP party in the constituency to work together and ensure the party wins the 2024 general election.
