11-year-old Rahimmah Mohammed was named the overall winner of the 2023 Girls in ICT program by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization on Tuesday, May 9, at the Damongo Community Centre in the Savannah Region.
She performed remarkably well, obtaining 92% on the ICT literacy training test.
Miss Rahimmah received GH¢3,000.00 (Three Thousand Ghana Cedis) in cash, a participation certificate, a laptop, a bag, and other prizes for her outstanding performance.
The class six(6) pupil at the T. I. Ahmadiyya Primary School in Kpalbusi in the North East Gonja District, placed first out of 1,000 young girls who were chosen from the seven districts in the Savannah Region.
She expressed her joy after getting the prizes at the Climax.
“Little did I realize I was going to make history when Mr. Awal requested me to tell my father I had been picked to study ICT with five other girls from my school. What a pivotal week in my life that was for me. Despite the fact that my father owns a laptop, I had never used one before the Girls in ICT Training. I can’t believe I now have a laptop of my own. Thank you, Honourable Ursula Owusu-Ekuful. I am grateful” she said.
She noted that before joining Girls in ICT, she only knew of a stem being a component of a plant. However, after undergoing training and coaching for the past three months, she was happy to find that STEM represented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
“With the exposure we have had, I want to pledge to the Hon. Ministers on behalf of my 999 friends that we will work hard to learn and pursue careers in STEM, as she is inspiring us to do. We have also embraced the challenge of competing favourably with our male counterparts in the ICT industry. We’ll make sure that your efforts are rewarded.” Rahimah added.
Alfreda Frimpong of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district, who obtained a score of 90% in the ICT training and competition, was named the 2nd Runner-Up. She received GH¢ 2,500.00 (two thousand, Five Hundred Ghana Cedis) in cash, a laptop, and a Laptop bag.
Miss. Salu Saratu Alele of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district was third scoring 89%.
