The Human Trafficking Secretariat (HTS) under the auspices of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has successfully carried out a three-day Market Sensitization programme on Trafficking in Person (TIP) in the Volta Region.
The three-day programme which was organized in collaboration with the Welfare of Children and Youth Association Ghana, an NGO under the Expertise France project funded by the European Union in Ghana commenced on Wednesday May 17 and ended on Friday May 19, 2023.
With the purpose of creating awareness on the dangers of trafficking and to educate the communities on the issues of TIP, the programme also sought to equip market women with knowledge to understand the dimensions of the issues of sexual and gender-based violence and the urgency to end child labor and exploitation.
As part of the sensitization exercise, officers from the Human Trafficking Secretariat, Department of Gender, and the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Volta Region Desk paid a courtesy call on the Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Martin Kofitsey Nyahe and Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Maxwell Kofi Lugudor to brief them on the activities and to solicit for their support.
The sensitization activities were held in Akatsi, Ketu and Denu market centres as well all as its environs through interactive conversation, sharing of flyers, visiting media houses and usage of the Market Information Centres.
In 2010, the General Assembly adopted the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons (TIP) and urged the Government to take coordinated and consistent measures to defeat this menace.
