Mr. James Gyakye Quayson has officially declared his intention to contest in the upcoming by-elections in the Assin North constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statement released on June 1, 2023, Mr. Quayson said: “When I took the decision to put myself forward as a candidate for the 2020 Parliamentary Election in the Assin North constituency, on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), I did so with a determination to serve the people of the constituency with all my heart, soul, body and all the resources I could muster in the service of my people”.

He added that “My roots in the Assin North Constituency run deep and all I wanted was the opportunity to meet the needs of my people on a larger scale. The Assin North Constituency lives in abject stagnation as a result of years of neglect”.

According to him, he renounced his Canadian citizenship in December 2019 and returned to Ghana to serve the people of Assin North.

But on May 17, 2023, the Supreme Court of Ghana gave a ruling declaring as invalid his nomination, election and subsequent swearing-in as Member of Parliament and asked Parliament to expunge Gyakye Quayson from its records.

Meanwhile, Mr. Quayson has decided to contest again to win power for the National Democratic Congress in the constituency.

Following Supreme Court orders, the Speaker of Parliament subsequently declared the Assin North seat vacant and asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a by-election.

The EC has also set June 27, 2023, to hold the by-election.
