The Black Princesses of Ghana were crowned champions of the maiden edition of the WAFU Zone B U-20 Cup of Nations held here in Ghana, after beating their West African rivals, Nigeria on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Both teams showed respect to each other and were cautious not to concede early, but it was the host nation that took a lead in the first half.
Ghana was awarded a penalty with just 13 minutes to the end of the first half after a foul on Comfort Owusu in the penalty box.
Captain of the Black Princesses, Stella Nyamekye stepped up to score from the spot kick to give Ghana the advantage.
Ghana showed more determination in the second half, as they defended well in most part of the second 45 minutes to protect their 1-0 advantage but with just 5 minutes to the end of the game, Nigeria equalized through Flourish Sebastine to send match into penalty shoot out.
Ghana’s goalkeeper, Afi Amenyaku was the heroine of the day as she saved three penalties to help Ghana win 3-1 on penalties.
