The governing New Patriotic Party has elected Charles Opoku as the parliamentary candidate to contest in the Assin North by-election scheduled for June 27, 2023.
Following Supreme Court’s ruling on James Gyakye Quayson and ordering Parliament to expunge his name from its records, parliament declared the Assin North seat vacant.
The electoral commission per the constitution is expected to organize a by-election to elect a representative of the constituency in Parliament.
Speaking after the elections, the communications director of the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah said the people of Assin North need an honest person to represent them in parliament.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) claims Charles Opoku does not qualify to contest in the constituency since he is not a registered voter in the Assin North constituency.
Charles Opoku won the primary with 397 votes out of the total valid votes of 536.
