Head coach of the Black Stars, Chris Hughton has provided an update on the injury of Black Stars defender, Gideon Mensah, explaining that he has been playing for his club in the just ended season with injury.

He said after the Black Stars medical team assessed the 24-year-old, he decided not to involve him in Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier game against Madagascar

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday evening, the head coach indicated that the decision to rule him out is because it is not right to risk.

“The situation with Gideon is that his club has been managing an injury that he has. This is somebody who has been playing in all the [club’s] games.

Sometimes you get a feel from a player, a player who is not so confidence in coming or a player who wanted to come. Gideon wanted to be here and that’s good sign.

So it was our responsibility to assess him, to know where he is at the moment with the medical information and come to a conclusion and the conclusion is that probably at this stage, we didn’t want to risk him.”

The 64-year-old added that he is not thinking of replacing Gideon yet with another player.

“We haven’t brought any replacement in.

We will work this work this week, and if we feel different after these few days, then we will assess that again and perhaps, somebody will be in the standby situation but at this moment, we are not bringing any other player in.”
