The Minority in Parliament, together with other pressure groups, will today, Tuesday, October 3, 2023, embark on its planned OcuppyBoG protest.
The protest is being organised against the BoG governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his two deputies for what the minority terms as reckless spending of public funds and illegal printing of money for the Akufo-Addo-led government.
The group is demanding that the governor and his deputies resign over the GH¢60 billion loss the bank recorded in the 2022 fiscal year, as well as the controversial new head office project of the central bank.
The protest which was initially scheduled for September 5, had to be rescheduled on two occasions after the police filed an injunction against the protest.
According to the police, the group’s choice of route for the protest was not safe, hence the injunction. However, after several court sessions, both parties have come to a common understanding, and the protest is expected to take place today.
At a press conference on Monday, the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service (GPS), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Grace Ansah-Akrofi, told journalists that the protesters were expected to converge at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, proceed to Adabraka—River Roundabout—National Theatre Traffic Light—High Court Complex Traffic Light—Attah Mills Highway, make a U-turn at the National Lottery Authority, and terminate at the Independence Square.
Meanwhile, the communications director for the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, said in an interview on CitiFM, “The police have been very unreasonable on the routes, but in the interest of public order and public safety and because we want to embark on this peaceful demonstration to press home our demands, we had compromises, which we have agreed to. So on Tuesday, the demonstration is coming on.”
The Ghana Police Service has also assured that it is adequately prepared and has enough contingents to deploy for the protest.
