The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Ministry of Health, Isaac Offei Baah, has pleaded with mortuary attendants across the country to rescind their decision to embark on a nationwide strike expected to begin on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.

The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has demanded better working conditions in recent times, and in a statement released on November 22, the association noted that efforts to resolve their grievance have proved futile; hence, they will exempt themselves from any work-related activity in the mortuary across the country.

Portion of the statement copied to the Ministry of Health and other relevant ministries indicated that, “At the general meeting of members of MOWAG, it was agreed that since all avenues to resolve our grievances have proven futile, a notice of indefinite nationwide strike is served as in Section 159 of Act,651(2003). Our position is that all Mortuary Workers in Ghana shall lay down their tools starting on Wednesday, 29th November 2023, until all matters already in your domain are resolved.”

Responding to the association on Monday, November 27, 2023, the PRO for the ministry, Isaac Offei Baah, said in an interview on Accra-based Okay FM that the government is dealing with concerns raised by members of MOWAG, and therefore it will be imperative that they come to the table for a discussion.

He also noted that efforts to reach leadership for MOWAG have not been successful; hence, he is calling on the association to rescind their decision to lay down their tools.

“They should rescind their decision to strike. The issues they raised are being worked on. We’ve been trying our best to get them to come to the table but to no avail. They will be surprised by what we are doing to make their work better. We are pleading with them to rescind their decision and come to the table for a discussion,” he emphasized.
