Government through the Minister for Communication and Digitalisation, Mrs Ursula Owusu Ekuful has denied claims of selling its 30% shares in Vodafone Ghana.

This response came after Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Mr. Rockson Nelson Etse Dafiamekpo asked the Minister if the government has any plans of selling its shares in Vodafone Ghana.

Former Minister for Communication and Digitalisation and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu also alleged that the government has sold the shares for less than $100 million, despite the company’s estimated value of $1 billion.

But on the floor of Parliament on Monday, December 11, 2023, Mrs. Owusu Ekuful explained that Vodafone Ghana has rather transferred its seventy percent ( 70%) stake in the company to the Telecel Group in February 2023 adding that government has no plans to sell its remaining 30% shares.

She added that, under the shareholders’ agreement, the consent of the minority shareholder which is the government of Ghana is not required for Vodafone Ghana to transfer or sell its shareholding in Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited”.

“Mr Speaker, the government of Ghana has no plans of selling its 30% shareholding in Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited. Vodafone Ghana, which holds 70% has transferred its stake to the Telecel Group in February 2023.”

“Under the shareholders’ agreement, the consent of the minority shareholder is not required for Vodafone Ghana to transfer or to sell its shareholding in Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited”, she clarified.
