President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has urged the Minister of Information to lead the charge to demand better conditions of services for journalists.
Addressing a gathering at the GJA Annual Dinner on Thursday, December 21, 2023, “Despite the crucial role journalists play in the development of the nation, their conditions of services are nothing to write home about”.
This is according to him is not limited to private media houses alone but journalists in State-owned media also suffer a similar fate.
Mr. Dwumfour said journalist cannot perform their role as the fourth estate effectively if they are not properly remunerated.
The GJA President also mentioned that the lack of proper wages has forced journalists to rely on other means such as taking ‘soli’ to cater to their basic needs thereby negatively affecting media independence and freedom adding that on October 7, 2023, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), has called on media organizations pay practitioners the wages due them, in order for them to be cushioned amidst the skyrocketing inflation that has severely impacted many economies.
“The issue of working conditions of journalists must be taken seriously as it tends to affect the performance of journalists in this country. I will call on the Honorable Minister of Information to lead this charge.”
The objective of the second edition of the GJA Annual Dinner Night was to facilitate association members and journalists in establishing connections and socializing with their professional peers.
