The Minister for Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Dr. Bryan Acheampong has called for an improved payroll for civil servants to correspond with their growing workload in the country.
According to Dr. Acheampong, it is important to create a conducive working environment for civil servants which includes renovating office spaces for effective work delivery and increased payroll.
The Minister made this request when the head of Civil Service, Dr. Evans Aggrey-Darkoh led a delegation to the ministry to introduce himself and ask for the minister’s support as the Civil Service begins a rebranding journey and repositioning to be a more effective government machinery.
Dr. Bryan Acheampong in welcoming the delegation expressed his satisfaction with the transformative initiative taken by the Civil Service to ensure the system runs effectively to deliver on Government policies and programmes but bemoaned the lack of urgency to promote technical officers who are due for the next grade.
For the Service to be more efficient and deliver its mandate, the minister said “The payroll should be improved to commensurate work and a wage structure should be adopted to deal with the low-income levels of civil servants”.
Citing the MoFA’s restructuring process as an example, the Minister said Planting for Food and Job 2.0 was a clear pathway for the sector hence the Civil Service should also adopt a pathway.
Dr. Aggrey-Darkoh mentioned that the Civil Service as an institution has helped the government build vibrant democratic systems adding that the Office of the Head of Civil Service (OHCS) is reviewing the Civil Service Act to reflect the changing dynamics of the service citing the new Appraisal System adopted by the service as an example, which he said has proven to be a scientific instrument for measuring and checking performances.
