The University of Ghana (UG), has commenced investigations into the assault of a student alleged to be ‘gay’ on the school’s campus.
In a video that has been widely circulated on social media, the alleged ‘gay’ was seen completely naked and being physically assaulted, while being made to walk around the campus.
The university in statement dated January 16, 2024 and signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah described such act as lawless, and pledged their commitment to the safety of all persons within the academic community.
“The University of Ghana strongly denounces the assault and denigration perpetrated by the persons seen in the videos posted on social media, and strongly condemns such acts of lawlessness. The University of Ghana would like to affirm its commitment to the safety, dignity and inclusivity of all persons,” part of the statement indicated.
Additionally, management of UG in the statement said they have in collaboration with the police began investigations into the matter, warning that it will vigorously punish any person found to be part of assaulting the victim.
“Management takes its commitment to the enforcement of the rules and regulations governing the University seriously, and any member of the University community identified to be involved in this cruel incident will be appropriately sanctioned. Management assures the public that the University will continue to work with the Ghana Police Service for a thorough investigation into the matter and to ensure the safety of of all members of the University community as well as visitors to our campuses.”
