Economic hardship has left traders in Amasaman with no option but to continue selling along the dusty road, despite several warnings and unpleasant scenes they come across daily.
According to them, the Ga West Municipal Assembly’s Task Force has on many occasions compelled them to go to the market to sell, but after a week, they come back to the roadside to continue their business.
Justifying their reason for selling by the roadside, they claimed that they couldn’t afford a space at the main market due to their financial difficulties.
When asked about the dangers they go through selling at a construction zone, the traders lamented the dusty nature of the road making their items unhygienic.
“The dust is worrying us. Now, our customers do not come as they used to and it is affecting our sales. I live here too, and our homes are being affected by the dust, which occasionally makes our kids cough,” said Jennifer, a trader who sells by the roadside at Amasaman.” The traders said
They said they are aware of the accidents that primarily happen along the Amasaman stretch, but selling there is their only way to support their families and make ends meet.
“We have been at loggerheads with the Assembly since the commencement of the construction of the road, we cannot relay any information to you, else, today will be the last day of selling here for us, and the consequence of this, will affect our families”, they told Republic Press Reporter.
The traders are appealing to the Assembly to reduce the amount charged to secure a place in the market.
