Two minors have tragically lost their lives while a mother fights for survival following a devastating fire that ravaged their home in Akyem Oda in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The victims, Clement Agyei, age 6, and Desmond Agyei, age 4, perished in the blaze, and their mother together with a third sibling sustained severe injuries
According to reports, Clement and Desmond both attended Ridge Experimental Basic School in Akim Oda.
The fire, which engulfed a three-bedroom house, resulted in the loss of property worth thousands of Ghana Cedis.
The incident happened on Sunday, May 12, 2024, night around 11:00 pm
Efforts to rescue them were heroic, young men in the neighbourhood bravely saved the mother and another sibling from the inferno.
However, despite these efforts, the two children could not be saved.
Explaining the incident to the media, an eyewitness Mary Brew said that despite efforts to rescue everyone, the arrival of Ghana National Fire Service personnel was too late to prevent the devastating loss of life.
“There was pandemonium, after the woman and a child were saved, she returned shouting two more kids were in the inferno. None could enter to rescue them, unfortunately. The Fire Service personnel came in later to quench the fire and bring out the bodies,” the eyewitness said.
Madam Mary Brew added that an electrical fault may have caused the tragedy, noting that the house had recently been connected to electricity.
The family, now left homeless and grieving, appeals for support in their time of need.
Auntie, Portia Effah, the surviving mother is therefore calling on authorities to come to their aid because the house was completely burnt.
“We beg for support. Times are hard. We have lost our building, our children, and all our belongings. A little support would be appreciated,” pleaded Auntie Portia Effah.
