Some residents of Tutuka also called Dokyikrom in the Ahafo Kenyasi of the Ahafo region demonstrated against Newmont Gold Ghana for relocating members of the community to a new location without prior notice and compensation.
Report says, members of the Ghana Police Service chased and whipped some of the demonstrators for protesting at the Newmont Ahafo plant site.
According to Mr Kofi Adusei, Chairman of Dokyikrom Unmarked Structures Owners, members of the community who were served late notice to relocate decided to stage demonstration against Newmont Gold Ghana at Ahafo plant site to communicate their displeasure to the authorities of the company.
He said the affected members of the community who were served letters from Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] were asked to leave the location due to the adverse effect of Newmont’s mining activities on the community but they were never compensated or given any new place to settle.
Asked why they staged the protest without informing the Police, the Chairman of Dokyikrom Unmarked Structures Owners stated that they served letter to the District Police Commander for approval to demonstrate but he kept denying them their right.
“So we decided to demonstrate on our own and hence the crash with police.” The Chairman noted
However, Police has refused to respond to the allegations of brutality.
