The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has disclosed that a total of 380 commercial drivers have been apprehended for charging passengers fees that were not approved by the authorities.

According to him, the operation began in November 2025 as part of a broader effort to enforce fare regulations during the Christmas season.

He also revealed that the Regional Coordinating Council is in talks with the Ministry of Transport to secure additional bus support for the Christmas festivities.

In a Facebook post, the Minister stated that “since last month, 380 drivers have been arrested for charging an unapproved fee. We’re also in talks with the Ministry of Transport for bus support.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has also deployed a task force aimed at curbing unapproved fares on the city’s roads.

Henrietta Afia Konadu, Public Relations Officer for KMA, explained that the task force, acting on the directive of the Kumasi Mayor, will conduct spot checks and enforce compliance with the approved fare schedule.

“The mayor has instructed us to intensify monitoring and ensure that drivers adhere to the prescribed rates,” Konadu said. “Our officers will be out on the streets, and any driver found charging illegal fees will face the full force of the law.”

Both the regional and municipal authorities emphasised that the measures are intended to protect passengers and maintain order during one of the year’s busiest travel periods.

They urged the public to report any instances of fare overcharging to the relevant authorities.
