The Mankranso District Police Command, in collaboration with the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly, has launched a decisive operation to dismantle illegal mining activities in parts of the district.

The targeted enforcement action took place on Monday, June 2, 2025, in the Mpasaaso and Achiaase enclaves—known hotspots for unauthorised mining.

The operation forms part of intensified efforts by security agencies and local authorities to curb environmental degradation and enforce Ghana’s mining laws.

In a statement issued by the Regional Police Headquarters in Kumasi and signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit in the Ashanti Region, the police disclosed that the presence of the task force prompted several illegal miners to flee, leaving behind equipment and weapons.

“As the security team approached, individuals engaged in illegal mining abandoned the sites and took to their heels, allowing us to secure the area and conduct a thorough inspection,” DSP Ahianyo stated.

During the operation, law enforcement officers recovered an array of dangerous items from the deserted mining camps. These included:

One (1) CAL 9mm pistol loaded with three (3) rounds of live ammunition

Four (4) pump-action shotguns

Twelve (12) live BB cartridges

Five (5) live AA cartridges

Five (5) heavy-duty excavators used for illegal mining

The firearms and ammunition have since been transferred to the Mankranso District Police Command for detailed forensic analysis and investigations.

The impounded excavators are currently being held at the premises of the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly.

DSP Ahianyo praised the security personnel and local authorities who participated in the operation, describing it as a success that sends a strong warning to illegal miners.

“The Ashanti Regional Police Command commends all officers and stakeholders involved in this coordinated action. We are determined to rid our communities of illegal mining operations that threaten both lives and the environment,” he said.

He further appealed to the public to support the police by sharing timely and credible information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of persons engaged in galamsey activities.

This operation marks a renewed push by regional security forces to protect Ghana’s water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves from the devastating effects of unregulated mining.
