Four illegal miners have lost their lives after a galamsey pit collapsed at Sukuumu near Gyaman-Nkwanta in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.
The tragic incident occurred around 4:00 pm on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, throwing the community into grief and shock.
According to reports, the land had initially been allocated to Volta Resource, a mining company, which allegedly allowed illegal miners to operate on the site.
The government later assigned Logist Group Company Limited to reclaim the degraded land as part of efforts to restore the environment.
However, despite the ongoing reclamation exercise, the victims reportedly entered the abandoned pit to continue illegal mining activities when the pit suddenly caved in, trapping them underground.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies were dispatched to the scene to assist with rescue efforts.
An excavator was later deployed on Wednesday evening to retrieve the bodies from the collapsed pit.
Sources identified the leader of the group as Solomon Amadevor, while the identities of the remaining three victims are yet to be officially disclosed pending investigations.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about the dangers of illegal mining and the increasing number of deaths associated with unsafe galamsey operations across the country.
