The government has launched an investigation into violent clashes that disrupted the Council of State elections in the Ashanti Region on February 11, 2025. Reports indicate that armed thugs overpowered police officers, raising serious concerns about security measures and voter safety.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, called on Interior Minister, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka to outline measures being taken to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents.

In response, the Interior Minister confirmed that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence.

He assured the public that the government remains committed to maintaining peace and upholding the rule of law throughout the electoral process.

The incident has reignited calls for a comprehensive review of election security protocols to prevent similar occurrences. Election-related violence remains a recurring issue in Ghana.

In the 2020 general elections, at least eight people lost their lives, while unrest during the 2024 polls resulted in at least six fatalities, despite promises of reform.

Authorities have assured Ghanaians that those found culpable will face the full force of the law as investigations progress.
