A distraught mother in Pankrono-Estate, Kumasi, has threatened legal action and suicide after the Ghana Police Service allegedly wrongfully arrested her three sons in connection with the recent murders of mobile money vendors.
Mrs. Mary Kyei, the mother at the center of the controversy, says the police forcefully entered her home at night and arrested her children in pursuit of a suspect.
She claims that despite her sons’ subsequent release, their lives have been ruined due to a viral video of their arrest circulating online.
“Now, the real suspects have been arrested and named by the police, while my children have been released as innocent,” she lamented. “But because they were recorded and labeled as criminals, people still call them armed robbers. They have lost their jobs and live in fear.”
Mrs. Kyei further alleges that the police extorted GH¢700 from her family during the bail process.
She is demanding a public statement from the Ashanti Regional Police to clear her sons’ names. If the police fail to act, she warns that her entire family may resort to extreme measures, including legal action and suicide.
Kwabena Mensah, alias Akupa, the youngest of the three brothers arrested, insists that they are innocent. He revealed that he was taken into custody after visiting the police station to check on his brothers.
The family is now appealing to the Inspector General of Police, the Ashanti Regional Minister, and the Regional Police Commander to intervene and restore their reputation.
