One person has been confirmed dead and several others injured following a confrontation between suspected illegal miners and the Ghana Police Service at Jacobu in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.
The incident, described by authorities as “unfortunate and avoidable,” occurred during a police operation in the area. Details surrounding the exact circumstances of the clash remain under investigation.
In a public statement issued on Tuesday, the Minister of State in charge of the Ashanti Region, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and sympathised with all those affected by the incident.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and sympathise with all persons affected by this incident,” the statement said, adding that government’s thoughts and prayers are with the injured and wishing them a speedy recovery.
Dr. Amoakohene urged citizens to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies and to comply with lawful orders, cautioning against confronting the police or engaging in actions that threaten public safety.
“Citizens should under no circumstances confront the police or engage in actions that threaten public safety, as has been seen in circulating videos,” he stated.
He also commended the Ghana Police Service for its continued efforts to maintain law and order, reaffirming government’s commitment to supporting the police and other security agencies in the performance of their duties.
According to the statement, investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the public has been assured that all persons found to have acted unlawfully will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The minister further appealed to community leaders, youth groups and other stakeholders in the Amansie Central District to support efforts to restore calm and ensure that lawful processes are respected.
The incident has renewed concerns over illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, and their impact on security and public safety in parts of the Ashanti Region
