The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched investigations into the unlawful possession of weapons and ammunition after officers intercepted a vehicle containing firearms on the Aputuoagya-Bekwai road on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

According to a police statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Region, the incident occurred during routine patrols by the Kuntanase District Patrol Team.

The officers spotted a white Toyota Sienta with registration number NR 289-24 suspiciously parked near a bushy area.

Two men were seen standing by the vehicle, allegedly smoking a substance suspected to be narcotics. On noticing the patrol team, the men fled into the nearby bush and managed to escape despite a chase.

A search conducted on the abandoned vehicle led to the discovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, a locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines loaded with 30 rounds each, four packets of AK-47 ammunition containing 25 rounds each, and seven loose rounds of ammunition.

Other items retrieved included a pair of Wellington boots, a Huawei smartphone, cowrie shells, sandals, as well as a Ghana Card and a temporary driver’s license bearing the name of one of the suspects, which police are withholding for security reasons.

The vehicle has since been impounded at the Kuntanase Police Station, while all the exhibits have been secured to aid ongoing investigations.

DSP Ahianyo urged members of the public with information on the suspects to come forward, adding that the police remain committed to combating violent crime and ensuring public safety.
