A/R: Quarry companies threaten strike over encroachment

Quarry Operators in the Ashanti region have threatened to boycott work due to interference and encroachment from residents.

Quarry Operators in the Ashanti region have threatened to boycott work due to interference and encroachment from residents.

According to the quarry operators, people have illegally encroached on their site with buildings, hence their decision to lay down their tools.

Most of these residents, who live on the sites illegally, turn up to fight quarry companies for loud blasting to destroy them.

In an interview with the vice chairman of the association, Mr. Alexander Owoahene, several attempts to get the government to move these illegal settlers keep failing.

Mr. Owoahene mentioned that the quarry companies have decided to give customers a one-week ultimatum to get some gravel since workers are being forced to lay down their tools.

Some workers who spoke to the news team said they could no longer work, having in mind that their lives were at risk.

“We live in fear as workers. This is because most of these illegal residents have been threatening our lives”.

“We are therefore pleading with the government to make sure the law works. If we claim not to be worried about these incidents, we are liars”, the workers stressed.
