A powerful rainstorm has left dozens of residents homeless and forced the closure of the Nintin Presbyterian Primary School after causing widespread destruction in Nintin and Hwidiem, communities within the Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The storm, which struck late Tuesday evening, lasted approximately 30 minutes but caused significant damage to homes, schools, and power lines.
Hwidiem, a nearby community, also experienced severe impacts, with churches, private residences, and electricity supply disrupted.
One of the most affected institutions was the Nintin Presbyterian Primary School, where strong winds ripped off nearly the entire roof, leaving debris stuck in nearby trees and rendering the school unsafe for pupils and staff. As a result, authorities have temporarily shut down the school.
A team from the Sekyere District of the Presbyterian Church, led by District Minister Rev. Otu Aquah, visited the site to assess the damage and prepare a report for church authorities. Additionally, officials from the Ghana Education Service (GES), including the Schools Improvement and Support Officer (SISO), were present to evaluate the extent of the destruction and report to the Mampong Municipal Directorate.
Speaking to the media, Head Teacher Rev. Godfred Antwi described the devastation and highlighted the school’s urgent need for support to resume normal academic activities.
Meanwhile, several households have been severely affected, with some residents displaced from their homes. Local authorities and relief agencies are yet to announce support measures for affected individuals.
Community members are calling for swift intervention from the government, relief organizations, and corporate bodies to assist in rebuilding efforts and restore essential services to the affected areas.
