A quiet school day turned into a nightmare on Thursday when a teenage student accidentally discharged a firearm on campus, leaving two of his peers injured—one critically.
According to school sources, the incident happened during break time at a secondary school in the Suame area of Kumasi. Bernard Amoabeng, a form two student, allegedly brought a firearm to school. An argument reportedly broke out among some students about whether the weapon was real or operational.
In an apparent attempt to prove the gun was functional, Amoabeng is said to have pulled the trigger. The shot struck two students, sending panic across the school compound.
One of the victims, a girl identified only as Penamang, suffered a gunshot wound to her forehead. She was rushed to the Kwadaso Hospital for emergency care but was later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital due to the severity of her injuries. Her condition remains critical.
The second victim sustained less severe injuries and is reportedly in stable condition.
The Suame Police quickly responded to the incident and arrested Amoabeng. Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine how the firearm was obtained and brought into the school premises.
