The Member of Parliament for Abirem, Charles Asuako Owiredu, has launched a Gh¢500,000 scholarship scheme to support brilliant but needy students in the constituency.
The initiative was unveiled on Wednesday, August 5, during a gathering at the Abirem Afosu Senior High School Auditorium.
Under the scheme, several students at the SHS and tertiary levels will benefit annually. Beneficiaries will receive support to cover tuition, admission fees, books, and stipends for the duration of their studies.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Owiredu said education remains the surest way to break the cycle of poverty in the constituency.
“Too many of our children pass their exams but cannot continue because of money. This fund is to ensure that no child in Abirem is denied education because their parents cannot afford it,” he stated.
The MP added that a member-panel scholarship board made up of educationists, traditional leaders, and assembly members will oversee the selection process to ensure transparency.
The Birim North District Director of Education, Solomon Azubila Akuruoko, commended the MP and urged parents to encourage their wards to take their studies seriously to qualify.
Nananom and PTA executives who attended the event praised the initiative, describing it as “timely” ahead of the new academic year.
The MP added his office will distribute trunk, mattress for BECE students in Birim to cover some 2,000 beneficiaries.
Applications for the first batch of beneficiaries open next month at the MP’s office in Abirem.
