Lawmaker for Abetifi and a Flag-bearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Bryan Acheampong has supported the party’s Parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie for Ablekuma North rerun with a cash amount of Gh¢200,000 to aid her campaign activities.

The MP, also extended a separate $6,500 cash support to coordinators and polling station chairpersons in the constituency to bolster ground operations ahead of the high-stakes vote set for Friday, July 11, 2025.

The rerun comes after the Electoral Commission (EC) ordered a fresh contest in 19 polling stations, following disputes over the December 2024 election results.

Although the NPP initially opposed the EC’s decision and filed a legal challenge, the Accra High Court dismissed the party’s injunction request on July 9.

Defying the party’s prior directive, Nana Akua Afriyie has vowed to participate in the rerun.

“Tomorrow I am contesting,” she declared.

“I won the election and I am contesting tomorrow’s rerun to show the whole world for it.”

Following the court ruling, the NPP has shifted its stance and officially resumed campaigning in Ablekuma North.

Speaking at a July 8 press conference, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong affirmed the party’s support for Afriyie, stating, “We are resolute and we know that our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the elections with a margin of 414 votes.”

He emphasized that the party will not be intimidated and is committed to defending what it sees as its electoral mandate.

The rerun is expected to be closely fought, with tensions running high in the constituency.

Hundreds of NPP supporters have hit the ground campaigning, encouraged by the Electoral Commission’s decision to retain Afriyie’s picture on the ballot paper.
