The Accra Regional Police Command has initiated a full-scale criminal investigation into the violent disturbances and assaults that marred the Ablekuma North Parliamentary re-run held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
In an official statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the Police confirmed that they are in possession of several video recordings from polling stations and are currently analyzing the footage to identify all individuals involved in the incidents.
“The command has also progressed to obtain statements from complainants and witnesses to support the ongoing investigations,” Supt. Obeng stated.
She added that the Police have gathered vital leads and assured the public that arrests will be effected soon.
As part of efforts to support victims, the affected individuals have been issued with Police Medical Report Forms for medical evaluation and treatment.
The statement further revealed that the Police officer captured in one of the widely circulated videos physically assaulting a journalist has been interdicted and is now facing criminal charges for assault.
“In line with due process, the Police Officer captured in one of the videos, assaulting a journalist, has been held for criminal charges of assault,” the statement emphasized.
The Regional Command reaffirmed its commitment to upholding law and order, particularly during democratic processes such as elections.
“We reiterate our commitment to ensuring that all persons responsible for acts of violence, intimidation, or misconduct during the elections will be held accountable under the law. We encourage the public to cooperate with the Police and share any credible information by contacting us on emergency numbers 18555 or 191,” Supt. Obeng concluded.
The Ablekuma North re-run, held to resolve a previous electoral dispute, was marred by several acts of violence and intimidation that have drawn widespread condemnation from civil society and media watchdogs.
The Police say updates will be provided as investigations progress.
