Accra never sleeps, Ghana’s bustling capital, from the vibrant streets of Osu to the rhythmic beats of Labadi Beach, the city’s nightlife is an untapped goldmine waiting to be fully explored. As Ghana continues to develop its tourism sector, the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) is stepping up with an exciting initiative— ‘Night Tour: Accra by Night’, set to launch on May 1, 2025. The tour promises an exciting journey through the city’s most vibrant nightlife spots and iconic landmarks, offering both locals and visitors an unforgettable after-dark experience. With the rise of experiential tourism, this initiative aims to showcase Accra’s rich culture, historical sites, and entertainment hotspots in a unique way
A City That Comes Alive at Night
The capital’s nightlife is diverse and electrifying. Whether it’s the sizzling street food at the Osu Night Market, the laid-back atmosphere of Accra’s beachfront lounges, or the pulsating beats of live highlife and afrobeat performances, there’s something for everyone. “For international visitors arriving in Ghana for conferences and business engagements, their evenings are mostly free. ‘Accra by Night’ presents the perfect opportunity to experience the cultural heartbeat of the city,” explains Professor Kobby Mensah, CEO of Ghana Tourism Development Company(GTDC). “The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of a 24-hour economy, ensuring that Accra remains active and welcoming at all times.”
Osu Night Market: A Culinary Wonderland
At the heart of Accra’s night economy lies the Osu Night Market, a historic trading hub that embodies the spirit of Ghanaian street food culture. The aroma of sizzling kelewele (spicy fried plantains), freshly grilled tilapia, and aromatic waakye fills the air as both locals and tourists explore the variety of flavours Ghana has to offer. Beyond food, the market provides an economic lifeline for traders who thrive in the bustling night economy. Vendors like Auntie Akosua, who has been selling grilled chicken at Osu for over a decade, express their excitement about the potential increase in tourism. “We are happy this night tour will bring more customers our way. Tourists will now know that Ghana is not just about daytime attractions but has a lively nightlife, maximising culture too.”
A Seamless Fusion of History and Entertainment
Accra by Night is more than just a tour—it’s an experience. Visitors will journey through iconic landmarks such as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, where Ghana’s independence story is brought to life under the city’s twinkling skyline. The GTDC has ensured that security remains a top priority. “Given that this is the maiden edition of the night tour, we are working closely with the Ghana Police and the 24-hour Economy Secretariat to provide tight security along all routes,” Prof. Mensah assures. “Tourists can feel safe while enjoying the beauty of Accra at night.”
The Night Beach: A Hidden Gem to Boost Ghana’s Tourism and Revenue
For those who prefer a more tranquil night, Labadi Beach and Sakumono Beach offer a serene escape. Here, the cool ocean breeze and live drumming performances create an enchanting experience. Watching cultural dancers perform against the backdrop of the moonlit sea is nothing short of magical. Beyond the entertainment and cultural immersion, ‘Accra By Night’ is expected to significantly contribute to Ghana’s tourism revenue. The initiative falls under the Black Star Experience, a broader government strategy aimed at increasing tourist arrivals and enhancing Ghana’s global appeal. “By creating a seamless 24-hour tourism experience, we are maximizing revenue streams while promoting our heritage,” Prof. Mensah highlights. “This is the future of tourism—day and night, Accra has something to offer.”
Where to Go After a Conference?
For conference attendees looking to unwind after a long day of business meetings, Accra’s nightlife presents endless options. From high-end rooftop bars with panoramic city views to cultural music lounges where visitors can dance the night away, there’s never a dull moment. For those seeking a deeper connection to Ghana’s heritage, interactive drumming and dance sessions are also part of the tour. “Our goal is to provide visitors with a hands-on experience,” says Prof. Mensah. “Whether it’s joining a dance circle or enjoying a storytelling session under the stars, tourists will leave with unforgettable memories.”
A Future-Ready Tourism Economy
The launch of ‘Accra By Night’ marks the beginning of a new era for Ghana’s tourism. With investments in infrastructure, security, and experiential tourism, the night economy is set to become a major contributor to the nation’s GDP. So, the next time you find yourself in Accra after dark, don’t just retreat to your hotel room. Step out, explore, and experience the heartbeat of Ghana—because in this city, the night is just as alive as the day.
