Some areas in Accra have flooded after a heavy rainfall on Saturday, May14, obstructing the flow of vehicular traffic in some areas in the capital.
From June 3, 2015, fire and rain disaster where many lost their lives to last Saturday’s heavy rains caused floods in some parts of Tema Community 25, Golf City, Kaneshie First Light, Shiabu, Glefe and other places.
What is more worrying is the fact that residents living at Shiabu Night Market, Glefe and other parts of the city worked tirelessly to prevent flood waters from entering their rooms.
Ghana Meteorological Agency
Last Saturday’s rain even though predicted by the Ghana Meteorological Agency, there was nothing residents could do to avert the flood issue.
The Agency had earlier warned that “cloudiness is expected over most parts of the country this morning, with pockets of rain over southern Ghana.”
It added that breaks of sunshine will be experienced later, thus afternoon to evening rains is expected over parts of the middle and northern sectors.”
The Saturday rain affected close to 200 residents within Shiabu and Glefe in the Ablekuma West Municipality.
Human activities
Pouring out their frustration to the Republic Press, Mr. Albert Quaye a landlord blamed residents who are found of dumping refuse into gutters.
According to Mr. Quaye, all the gutters are choked so any slight rain will cause flooding.
“I wonder why the Assembly over the years have watched over this impunity without arresting and prosecuting perpetrators of this heinous crime,”
He called on the Assembly to intensify public education in the flood prone areas in the city on how to keep the gutters and the environment clean.
