The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey has cautioned traders temporarily operating on pavements in the Central Business District (CBD) not to pay any fees apart from the official GH₵2 daily market toll charged by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
He explained that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration was committed to protecting the poor and vulnerable, hence the directive that traders operating on pavements should not be charged any extra fees.
The Mayor issued the caution on Wednesday during a working visit to the CBD to sensitise traders about unauthorised fee collection and to ensure compliance with the Assembly’s directives on street trading and sanitation enforcement.
Addressing the traders, Hon. Allotey expressed concern over reports of individuals extorting money from hawkers and market women under the pretext of collecting fees on behalf of the Assembly or the Mayor, adding that such acts were illegal and urged traders not to pay any unauthorised fees to anyone.
