Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has confirmed that three people have died following a building collapse at the Accra New Town Experimental School in the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, March 29, 2026.
Speaking to the media, he revealed that 22 people have been rescued from the debris, while others are currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital, University of Ghana Medical Centre, and the Police Hospital. The deceased, he noted, are adults made up of one female and two males.
The Mayor commended the efforts of the military and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) for their swift response, stating that teams have been working tirelessly since the incident to save lives.
He also raised concerns about the safety of nearby buildings, warning that some structures in the area appear weak and may need to be pulled down to prevent future disasters. He stressed the importance of enforcing building regulations, noting that resistance from the public often hinders such efforts.
Michael Kpakpo Allotey assured that investigations will be conducted to determine the cause of the collapse and that government will support affected families. He added that he is yet to meet the victims’ families but emphasized that authorities will stand with them in this difficult time.
