The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey will tomorrow join President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to officially commission the long-awaited state-of-the-art Jamestown Fishing Harbour.

The multimillion-dollar project, constructed by the CRCC Harbour and Channel Engineering Bureau Group Co. Ltd. under the China Aid to Ghana Fishing Port Complex Project, is expected to transform the livelihoods of the local fishing community in Accra and enhance the country’s fishing operations.

With a fish market comprising 112 stalls, a 60-ton-per-day ice-making plant, and a cold storage capacity of 600 tons, the Jamestown Fishing Harbour is being hailed as a milestone project that aligns with the government’s vision to support sustainable resource management and food security.

The facility also includes a ship repair workshop, administration blocks, and fire safety systems to ensure smooth operations and long-term sustainability.

Speaking in an interview ahead of the commissioning, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, said the project was not only about improving the fishing industry but also revamping economic activities in the entire Ga Mashie enclave.

“The harbour is expected to create numerous employment opportunities while ensuring that fish handling and preservation meet international standards. This will greatly improve the livelihoods of our people,” she said.

The Mayor urged the community to take responsibility for maintaining the Jamestown Fishing Harbour, emphasising its transformative potential.

Mayor Sackey further disclosed that a sanitation court had been established to address any violations, warning that individuals caught defecating around the harbour would be fined and subjected to hard labour as a deterrent.

Other dignitaries expected to attend the commissioning include the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II and his entourage, as well as the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa.
