Some irresponsible locals of Nsunfa in the Ga Central Municipality of the Greater Accra Region have resorted to dumping their solid wastes in the road median on the Awoshie-Pokuase highway.
Republic Online reporter who monitored the situation reports that piles of refuse littering the road median are gradually taking over the main street.
It was observed that deviant residents have refused to put a stop to their irresponsible acts even after a signpost with the inscription “STOP DUMPING REFUSE HERE” was planted at the scene to warn them.
Some residents, in an interview, said that the refuses were usually dumped at night by some residents in the area.
In a swift reaction, the Ga Central Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Mohammed Bashiru said the environmental and sanitation department would soon evacuate the refuse and set up surveillance at the site.
“I will get the refuse evacuated and mount some surveillance,” The MCE
He said the Municipal will also continue to carry out enlightenment programmes to instil a good sense of environmental sanitation and cleanliness in the residents of the area.
In Ghana, about 12,710 tons of solid waste is generated daily, with only 10% collected and disposed of at designated dumping sites [13,ย 14].
A major challenge in the management of solid waste in Ghana is the collection and disposal process, which are labour-intensive and often not effective.
