The Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, has disclosed that, as part of the government’s efforts to improve mental health services in the country, the Accra Psychiatric Hospital is going to be redeveloped into a national facility.
The project, which is part of the government’s Agenda 111 initiative, is expected to modernize the facility, which is one of the country’s three psychiatric hospitals.
Speaking at a press conference in Trede, Ashanti Region, he stressed the need for the government to strategically develop psychiatric facilities across the regions.
“There are 111 eleven hospitals which comprise 101 district hospitals, 7 regional hospitals, 6 in the new regions and then 1 in the Western Region in Takoradi, and 2 regional psychiatric hospitals to improve mental health services in the country. As you are aware, all the psychiatric hospitals are down south, so we are putting 1 in Ashanti Region in Onwe, and another one in the northern sector at Tamale.
“We are also going to redevelop Accra Psychiatric Hospital which was built in 1914, into a national psychiatric hospital,” he said.
He added that the project will be a 220-bed facility, which will serve as a referral centre.
“We are also going to put up 220-bed redevelopment of Accra Psychiatric Hospital, to be a centre where all psychiatric cases which need advance treatment will be taken to.”
