The Accra West Regional Council of the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) hosted its maiden fun games on July 8, 2023, at the Dansoman Keep Fit Club in Accra.

The event was held with great enthusiasm and participation from the affiliate institutions of the Accra West Regional Council of PUWU, namely Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), State Housing Corporation, Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and the host team, Dansoman Keep Fit Club.

The team competed among themselves in Football, Volleyball, Tug of war, Ludu, Playing Cards, dodgeball, and Table Tennis.

The purpose of the program was to foster camaraderie, sportsmanship, and healthy competition among the public utility workers in the region. The fun games aimed to create a platform for employees from different organizations to interact, engage in friendly sports competitions, and strengthen their professional bonds.

The Accra West Regional Council of PUWU has been instrumental in advocating for the rights and welfare of workers in the public utility sector. With their commitment to the well-being of their members, organizing events such as the Fun Games becomes an avenue to encourage physical fitness and strengthen the bond between organizations operating under their umbrella.

One of the highlights of the event was the thrilling football match, which witnessed fierce competition between the teams from the participating organizations. In an impressive display of skill and determination, Ghana Water Company Limited and Accra West Divisional Union emerged as the winners of the football game, showcasing their exceptional talent on the field. To honor their outstanding performance, the team was presented with the coveted Trophy allocated for football.

In a remarkable feat, Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL)-Accra West received yet another accolade, being awarded the prestigious Overall Best Division (Organization) Trophy. This remarkable achievement underscores their dominant presence in the maiden edition of the fun games, as they swept almost all the best awards and left a lasting impression with their remarkable performance.

They amassed a total of 18 points, demonstrating their dedication, teamwork, and excellence in various sporting events.

The State Housing Company Ltd (SHC) secured the second position in the overall rankings, accumulating a commendable total of 9 points. Their spirited performances in multiple disciplines contributed to their success in the competition. Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana Projects Office claimed the third spot with a total of 8 points, showcasing their prowess and competitive spirit throughout the games.

The Senior Industrial Relations Officer in charge of the Region, Brother Isaac Yaotey Ako Jnr expressed his joy for a successful maiden program as they served as an opportunity for the hardworking Union members to unwind, showcase their sporting talents, and build stronger connections within the sector. We believe that promoting a healthy work-life balance is essential, and these fun games will contribute to achieving that,” he added.

He further extended a word of gratitude to the host team, Dansoman Keep Fit Club, Management and Unionized staff of all the participating divisions namely ECG Project Office, ECG Head Office, ECG Training School, ECG Materials Depot, ECG Accra West Region, GWCL Accra West Region, GWCL ATMA Production, SHC Ltd, CWSA and supporters who made the event a resounding success. This inaugural edition of the fun games not only promoted physical fitness and healthy competition but also fostered a sense of unity and camaraderie among the public utility workers in the Accra West region.

The Accra West Regional Council of PUWU looks forward to organizing more such events in the future, continuing to strengthen the bond among the participating organizations and providing an avenue for public utility workers to showcase their talents outside their regular work environments.

The Chairman of Dansoman keep fit Club also expressed his appreciation for members attending the event. He called for more collaboration and patronage. He advised workers to not focus on salaries only but to also focus on their health and lifestyle by exercising regularly. As part of activities for the day, the Dansoman Keep Fit Club (DKFC) / Power Gym was officially inaugurated to serve the people of Dansoman and its environs with a gym facility. The facility contains gym equipment that would enable people to exercise regularly.
