The Ada Traditional Council has accused members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ada Constituency of orchestrating the recent vandalism at Electrochem Ghana Limited on January 9, 2025.
According to the council, preliminary investigations point to the NDC’s involvement in the destructive acts.
At a press conference, Ada State Mankrado, Nene Agudey Obichere III, alleged that the NDC had engaged in criminal activities and incitement by spreading falsehoods and propaganda, which have caused unrest in the local community.
He accused party members of leading physical attacks on individuals, disrupting operations at Electrochem, unlawfully seizing control of the company’s premises, and looting its assets.
Nene Agudey Obichere III highlighted a statement made by a senior NDC member on December 1, 2024, which claimed that the party would take over the Songor area once President Mahama assumed office.
This, he noted, was justified by another senior NDC operative who argued that all governments in the Fourth Republic had allowed their members to manage the Songor salt mining operations while in power.
The Mankrado reminded the public that Electrochem Ghana Limited holds a valid lease, ratified by Parliament, for the Songor Lagoon and adjoining lands for 15 years.
He expressed outrage at the actions of the NDC members, warning that such behavior could create insecurity in the Ada area and discourage potential investors.
He further emphasized that the Traditional Council would not allow political interference or any other form of association to undermine the progress achieved since Electrochem’s takeover of the Songor Lagoon concession.
He criticized the illegal salt mining activities that had caused environmental degradation in the area before Electrochem’s intervention.
Nene Agudey Obichere III appealed to President John Mahama and the relevant security agencies to extend the same level of protection provided to other mining areas to Electrochem Ghana Limited.
He urged security forces to take swift action by arresting and prosecuting those responsible for the recent disturbances to ensure stability and safety in the community.
Electrochem Ghana Limited’s Operations Manager, Nene Odeopeor, revealed that the company has CCTV footage showing individuals vandalizing property, stealing valuable materials, and assaulting staff on-site.
He expressed confidence that the police, with this evidence, would take the necessary steps to apprehend those involved and restore calm to the area.
