Lawyers for embattled former Director of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu Boahene, have indicated that their client may be forced to reveal sensitive national security information in defense of his freedom, as legal proceedings against him intensify.

Addressing the High Court on Tuesday, May 13, lead counsel Samuel Atta Akyea clarified the context of a leaked internal memo authored by his client, which outlined various expenditures during his tenure.

He explained that the memo was intended to caution the current National Security Coordinator and to urge the Attorney-General and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to reconsider their approach in handling the case.

“The memo was not to spark controversy but to warn that this matter is being handled in a way that could have far-reaching consequences,” Atta Akyea said.

He revealed that just hours after being released on bail, Adu Boahene was re-arrested by EOCO in connection with a new investigation.

“Despite a court order for his release, EOCO freed him at midnight and immediately took him back into custody on fresh charges,” the lawyer told the court.

According to Atta Akyea, the new case reportedly involves procurement activities related to secured internet infrastructure and equipment for the Ghana Water Company Limited.

“He is not afraid to face trial, but if forced, he will speak on matters of national security. He feels he has been left with no choice,” he added.

Earlier in the day, the High Court reinstated the bail conditions granted to Adu Boahene on May 2, 2025, after a seven-day remand period. The court had previously revised his bail from GH¢120 million to GH¢80 million following a request from his legal team.

Adu Boahene, his wife Angela Adjei-Boateng, and co-accused Mildred Donkor, along with their company Advantage Solutions Limited, are facing 11 charges including conspiracy to commit crime, stealing, money laundering, abuse of public office for profit, and causing financial loss to the state.

The charges stem from the alleged theft of GH¢49.1 million in public funds.

The court has adjourned proceedings to May 26, 2025, and directed the prosecution to file and serve all witness statements and disclosures ahead of the next hearing.
