Lawyer for the Kristo Asafo Church, Nana Kofi Kantanka, has alleged that former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo fired the first shot during an incident that disrupted the formal introduction of the church’s newly appointed leader.
Nana Kofi Kantanka explained that the event had been organised to introduce the church’s newly selected leader to its General Council, the body representing the wider church membership.
Addressing reports of gunfire during the event, he claimed that Adwoa Safo arrived at the venue and attempted to gain entry by forcing her vehicle through the church gates.
According to him, attendees initially heard loud noises, which were later identified as the sound of a vehicle crashing into the southern gate of the premises.
“We realised that it was Honourable Sarah Adwoa Safo who was in the vehicle. When she could not get through the southern gate, she moved to the northern gate and repeated the same action,” he said.
Nana Kofi Kantanka stated that private security personnel became concerned for the safety of those gathered at the venue.
“The information I received is that she fired the first shot before crashing into the gate with her vehicle. The private security officers believed lives were at risk and responded with warning shots,” he claimed.
He added that he could not confirm reports suggesting that Adwoa Safo had been injured during the incident.
“As to whether she was wounded, I cannot confirm that,” he said.
The lawyer also dismissed claims that Adwoa Safo had been denied entry to the event, insisting that she would have been allowed access had she followed normal entry procedures.
“No one prevented her from entering. If she had parked and indicated her intention to attend, there would have been no issue,” he stated.
Nana Kofi Kantanka said the matter remains under investigation, with both state security agencies and church authorities expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
“The church will also conduct its own investigation, and anyone found to have committed wrongdoing will be prosecuted,” he added.
His comments come amid reports that Sarah Adwoa Safo is receiving medical treatment after gunmen allegedly opened fire on her vehicle near the residence of her brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena
