Some members of the Health Committee of Parliament from the Minority Caucus have petitioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority leadership and presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawunia to probe and punish former lawmaker Kennedy Ohene Agyapong for alleged ‘anti-party conduct’.”
The petition, dated 18 June 2026, accuses the firebrand politician of spreading misinformation and publicly sabotaging a sanctioned parliamentary oversight mission to the stalled Afari Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region.
The dispute stems from an incident on 10 June, when military personnel blocked members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health from accessing the facility, sparking an ugly scuffle at the gates.
Following the confrontation, Mr Agyapong publicly criticised the MPs, branding the oversight visit unwarranted and disputing claims regarding the hospital’s operational readiness.
The petitioners—led by Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, Ranking Member on the Health Committee, alongside MPs Dr Patrick Boachie Yiadom, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, and Frank Yeboah—strongly hit back, stating Mr Agyapong’s outbursts were “inconsistent with the principles of party discipline”.
“The visit was neither a unilateral nor an unauthorised action,” the petitioners stated, confirming that the tour had received the express backing of the Minority Leader, Chief Whip, and Deputy Chief Whip.
The MPs warned that ignoring Mr Agyapong’s public rebellion risks setting a “dangerous precedent” that could trigger deep indiscipline and derail political strategy ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“Public infighting of this nature clouds the object of the mission,” the petition noted. “The objective of the visit to Afari hospital has been undermined, and the public attention rather swayed from seeking redress by government to what appears as an internal wrangling.”
The document added: “Parliament, as an institution, is clothed with the responsibility to protect the interest of the citizenry. Any attempt to bring the reputation of the parliamentary party especially from a former Member of Parliament, must be treated with the contempt it deserves.”
The five lawmakers are demanding that the Parliamentary Leadership publicly rebuke Mr Agyapong and refer his conduct to relevant party organs for “necessary engagement and guidance” to preserve the cohesion of the caucus.
The Minority Leadership has yet to release an official response regarding whether the former MP will face formal disciplinary proceedings.

SUBJECT: PETITION AGAINST THE ANTI-PARTY CONDUCT OF HON. KENNEDY OHENE AGYAPONG IN RELATION TO THE AFARI MILITARY HOSPITAL VISIT
BACKGROUND
On 10th June 2026, we, the Minority Members of the Health Committee and with the express approval of the Minority Leadership, visited the Afari Military Hospital to ascertain and verify the status of the facility amid growing healthcare concerns in the Ashanti Region, particularly regarding the challenges confronting the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
During the visit, our delegation was prevented by military personnel from entering the facility, resulting in an unfortunate scuffle. The incident subsequently attracted widespread public attention and condemnation.
Following the incident and the ensuing public discourse, a former Member of Parliament and leading member of the party, Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, publicly criticized the visit, describing it as unwarranted and advancing claims that contradicted the known facts concerning the status and operational readiness of the hospital. In our view, these statements amounted to misinformation and served to mislead the public on a matter of significant national importance.
Accordingly, we hereby write to formally petition your good offices to investigate the conduct and public statements of the former Honourable Member and to take such action as may be deemed appropriate under the circumstances.
GROUNDS FOR THIS PETITION:
The visit was neither a unilateral nor an unauthorized action. Prior to undertaking the visit, the Minority Leader, the Chief Whip, and the Deputy Chief Whip were duly informed, and their approval was formally sought and obtained.
Given that the visit was duly sanctioned by the Minority Leadership, it was inappropriate for Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, apparently acting on inaccurate information and without due regard to the established facts, to publicly criticize a decision that had been properly authorized by the leadership of a constitutionally recognized body of Parliament.
The visit constituted a collective undertaking carried out in the public interest and in furtherance of the objectives of the Party. Consequently, for a former Member of Parliament to publicly disparage and undermine such an action is regrettable, inconsistent with the principles of party discipline, and potentially injurious to the unity and credibility of the Party.
IMPLICATIONS IF NO ACTION IS TAKEN BY PARLIAMENT:
Erosion of Leadership Authority & Confidence: Failure to act weakens the authority of the Minority Leadership and brings its decisions into public disrepute, a dangerous precedent for any organised political institution.
We must remember that Parliament, as an institution, is clothed with the responsibility to protect the interest of the citizenry. Any attempt to bring the reputation of the parliamentary party especially from a former Member of Parliament, must be treated with the contempt it deserves.
A Pandora’s Box for Indiscipline: Left unaddressed, Hon. Agyapong’s conduct risks emboldening others to act against sanctioned parliamentary party or party decisions, normalising indiscipline at the very moment unity is most needed.
Damage to the Party’s 2028 Ambitions: Public infighting of this nature clouds the object of the mission. As it is now, the objective of the visit to Afari hospital has been undermined, and the public attention rather swayed from seeking redress by government to what appears as an internal wrangling within the NPP over an issue that is totally needless. This situation erodes voter conference and hence threatens the party’s quest to win election 2028.
CONCLUSION
By this petition, we respectfully call on the Parliamentary Leadership to:
Publicly rebuke Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong for his unwarranted remarks and conduct, which have the potential to undermine the collective efforts and image of the Minority Caucus.
Refer his conduct to the appropriate organs of the Party for the necessary engagement and guidance, with a view to ensuring that such actions do not recur in the future and that party unity, discipline, and cohesion are maintained.
We trust that the Minority Leadership and the relevant Party organs will treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and take the necessary steps to protect the integrity, credibility, and collective interests of the Caucus.
