Captain of the Black Stars, Andre Ayew, has apologised for Ghana’s poor performance in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Black Stars suffered an early exit from the tournament in group stage, picking up only two points in three matches.
Placed in Group B, the Black Stars shared points each with Egypt and Mozambique after losing to Cape Verde in their opening match.
This led to widespread public outrage and condemnation for their appalling performance.
However, Andre Ayew in a video on Tuesday night acknowledged that they could have performed better than they did, accepting responsibility for their early exit.
“These past days have been very difficult for every Ghanaian and every Ghanaian football fan, and myself. “I would like to apologise for the results of the AFCON that we just exited. We know that we should have done better, that we should have brought better results to the nation.
“As the captain of the squad, I take full responsibility for what happened on the pitch for the playing body. In Football, these are things that happen. These are things that make you stronger, and what doesn’t kill you always makes you stronger person individually and collectively.”
He promised that the team will put whatever happened behind them and fight to bring more success to the country.
“We are Ghana, and everybody that knows me knows that I’m never gonna give up, meaning we are never going to give up. We are going to rise and shine again, we are going to do this as a family.”
