Afram Plains North DCE visits VLTC staff at Agordeke

The District Chief Executive Officer for Kwahu Afram Plains North, Kate Mawusi Babanawo on Monday, 19th May 2025, paid a courtesy call on the staff of the Volta Lake Transport Company (VLTC) at Agordeke. The visit aimed to formally introduce herself and to gather first-hand information about operations and challenges at the site.

During the visit, the following key issues were brought to her attention which included the lack of Proper Landing Sites at both Agordeke and Kpando Torkor, Faulty Engine, resulting in the ferry operating with only one engine for some time, Malfunctioning Pinion Gear, leading to frequent breakdowns of the ferry, Lack of Electricity at Agordeke, which negatively affects the comfort and productivity of the staff, Inadequate Accommodation, causing staff to share rooms due to limited space.

The DCE expressed her sympathy to the staff and assured them of her commitment to addressing these concerns with Immediate actions.

Landing Sites

She directed the District Engineer to collaborate with the VLTC staff to assess the situation and deploy the necessary DRIP machines to both Agordeke and Kpando Torkor for a lasting solution.

Ferry Maintenance

She pledged to pay a working visit to the Managing Director of VLTC to discuss the faulty engine and pinion gear issues and to explore ways to restore the ferry to full operation.

Electricity Supply

The DCE promised to engage the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on how the Rural Electrification Project could be extended to Agordeke, either by connecting it to the National Grid or establishing a Mini Grid system.

She assured the staff that steps were already being taken to secure additional rooms for their use, with work having begun immediately after her visit.

The DCE also proposed a new departure time of 8:00 a.m. at Agordeke, aimed at helping passengers reach their destinations earlier. The staff warmly welcomed the change, and the new schedule is set to take effect from 1st June 2025.

In her closing remarks, the DCE reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring a reliable, safe, and secure transport link between Agordeke and Kpando Torkor. She called on all stakeholders to join hands in supporting the development and improvement of lake transport services in the district.
