President Nana Akufo Addo has challenged leaders of African countries to quit begging the West if they want Africa to be respected.
He was speaking during the opening of the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit in Washington DC and said Africa will be respected without demanding it is made to prosper the way it is supposed to be.
“If we stop being beggars and spend African money inside the continent, Africa will not need to ask for respect from anyone, we will get the respect we deserve. If we make it prosperous as it should be, respect will follow.”
Akufo Addo also charged Africans to see themselves as one, other than different people as Africa’s prosperity depends on its unity.
“Africans are more resilient outside the continent than inside. We must bear in mind that to the outside world, [there’s] nothing like Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya, we are simply Africans. Our destiny as people depends on each other.”
Nana Addo’s comments came on the same day the IMF decided to lend Ghana $3 billion (£2.4 billion) to help the country recover from its economic crisis.
Close to 50 African leaders and representatives are in Washington, DC to for a key summit hosted by President Biden.
