The African Electoral Institute has praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for successfully organizing a peaceful demonstration on September 17, 2024, advocating for a forensic audit of the 2024 voter register by the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
The Institute emphasized that the 1992 Constitution allows citizens to voice grievances through peaceful means, such as demonstrations, rather than resorting to violence or unconstitutional methods. This approach, as demonstrated by the NDC, aligns with democratic principles and the right to express dissent.
The African Electoral Institute reiterated its commitment to good democratic governance in Ghana, noting that elections should be straightforward and accessible. The organization believes that free, fair, transparent, and accountable elections begin with a robust and credible voter register that meets the expectations of all political stakeholders.
Furthermore, the Institute stated that subjecting the voter register to forensic audit would enhance the credibility of the Electoral Commission and reinforce its commitment to conducting fair elections. It urged the Commission to reconsider its current stance on the issue.
The African Electoral Institute also welcomed the willingness of both the Minority and Majority leaders of Parliament to reconvene and address the NDC’s concerns following the submission of their petition. This collaborative approach aligns with the Institute’s call for Parliament to actively engage in finding a solution to this impasse.
In closing, the African Electoral Institute reminded the Electoral Commission and all political stakeholders of their responsibility to ensure peace in Ghana leading up to the December 7, 2024 elections. The Institute warned that any failure to maintain peace could have serious repercussions, urging all parties to work together to uphold the unity of the nation.
