The Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP) under the auspices of the office of the President is set to hold its maiden edition of the Africa Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC) scheduled for 2nd and 3rd August, 2023.
The two-day conference which will be held at the Kempinski hotel in Accra is to bring together a diverse range of participants including high-level government officials, experts, policymakers and representatives from international organizations to deliberate on the theme; “Amplifying the voices of women and children in climate action.”
In a press release to announce the theme of this all-important conference, the conference will foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration on climate change issues affecting women and children across Africa and the rest of the world.
The conference will also highlight on ways women can influence the achievement of positive climate action.
Climate change poses significant challenges worldwide, impacting vulnerable population,s especially women and children.
“As natural resource dependents and caretakers, women and children face diverse effects on their livelihoods, health and well-being hence urgent action to address their unique vulnerabilities in climate change”, the press statement noted.
In view of this, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has decided to include women and children in climate-related negotiations and decision-making processes.
The statement also noted that the outcomes of the AFRIWOCC 2023 will contribute to discussions at the Africa Climate Week and the Africa Climate Summit expected to take place in Nairobi, Kenya in September which will also shape Africa’s position at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties’ 28th session, (COP 28), scheduled for 30th November to 12th December 2023 in UAE.
