Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has rejected claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that President Akufo-Addo is packing the Supreme Court with his favorites.
The NDC has been accusing the President of stacking the court with judges sympathetic to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in an attempt to influence the outcome of potential election petitions and other key cases.
However, the AG has dismissed these allegations, stating that the nominations were made at the request of the Chief Justice based on operational requirements.
He emphasized that the Judiciary is better equipped to justify the need for an enhanced Supreme Court, and noted that the Supreme Court of Ghana is unique.
The NDC has been vocal in their criticism of the move, with General Secretary Fifi Kwetey expressing concerns over the nomination of five new judges to the Supreme Court.
The opposition party has alleged that the President and the Chief Justice are colluding to shield government officials from accountability after their term ends.
Despite these allegations, Mr Dame has dismissed any malice in the nominations, stating that the request came from the Chief Justice and was based on operational requirements.
The development highlights the ongoing tensions between the ruling NPP and the opposition NDC, as the country prepares for the December 2024 elections.
